A-Trak Drops Nike's Running Man Mix

Photobucket

US hip-hop and electro producer A-Trak is the latest artist to furnish Nike+ with a 45-minute piece of specially written workout music. The Montreal-hailing, New York-based A-Trak, best known for his collaborations with Kanye West, Kid Sister and Jay-Z, had this to say:

"I've been producing mostly uptempo electro tracks as of late, but my background is hip-hop and I think you can hear it in my choice of sounds. I wanted this record to showcase my current style, but I also didn't want to stray away from hip-hop completely. That's why you find guest rap verses in the mix, plenty of chopped & screwed vocals, and a hefty dose of drums breaks that are surely more block party than Ibiza."

The Montreal native produced this 45-minute composition specifically for runners, gradually building from a warm-up period, incorporating an extended middle section that finds a pavement-pounding groove, and ending with a downtempo closure for cooling down. A highlight from the beginning segment, "Say Whoa," will serve as A-Trak's inaugural artist single, offered exclusively by Nike Sport Music. The mix also features a show-stopping appearance by recently hyped Fool's Gold signee Kid Cudi.

It bodes well for A-Trak's new Nike+ Original Run album, titled Running Man, that this three-minute sampler is good enough to get us doing generally calisthenicky things that we would usually avoid unless coerced by guns or money. In fact, we're going to use this to build up our endurance for the full 45-minute mix coming out on June 24th only at Nike Sport Music on iTunes so that we may run like gazelles with the hipsters of New York. And may we say it's just in time because LCD Soundsystem's excellent and initially inspiring 45:33 Nike jawn has become our soundtrack not for running but watching our asses expand. We need change, and Running Man sounds like it.

It also appears that A-Trak will not pull an LCD and use this music for a separate album, as his first solo single, "Say Whoa" (from the mix), will be released exclusively by Nike. AND ALSO, if that's not enough Running Man leads into Nike+ Human Race on August 31st when "an expected one million runners in 25 cities across the globe will partake in a 10k that combines the power of running and music through sport and also gives participants the chance to run for a cause and support charities who have a positive impact on the world." We would guess more than a million people are running across the globe at any given moment, so it seems like a good idea to make them race. Check back soon for more.

About as cool as Syphilis

Photobucket

"He's been arrested six times since being drafted by Tennessee in 2005," Wolf said.

"What color is he?" Imus asked.

"He's African-American," Wolf responded.

"Well, there you go," Imus said. "Now we know."

Really? Honestly...how does this fucking quack still have a gig? I have never disliked an on air personality this much since...O'Reilly, but Congrats Don Imus. You have somehow out done yourself, and showed us again just how big of a backwards racist dueche bag cowboy asshole you are once again. Go fuck yourself Don Imus.

Here's a few more Accusations of defamatory speech from Good Ole Don...

* As "shock jocks', Imus and his crew, mainly Bernard McGuirk, repeatedly used 'politically incorrect' remarks through skits and character impersonations in what they considered a comical format which critics labeled as racist, misogynist, homophobic and anti-semitic. He has also been accused of making offensive remarks off the air. Some would cite these examples:

* In a 1984 interview, answering a question about Howard Stern, Don Imus said: "yes, Howard's a slut too, Lloyd...Plus a Jew bastard, and should be castrated... put in an oven" A clip of this interview was played by Howard Stern in the news section of his November 5, 2007 show.[cite this quote]

* African-American sports columnist Bill Rhoden referred to as a "New York Times quota hire".

* In 1993, PBS anchor Gwen Ifill (then with the New York Times) referred to as a "cleaning lady."

* As reported by New York Times columnist Bob Herbert,[70] in the course of a 1998 interview with Mike Wallace on 60 Minutes, Imus told a producer off-camera that McGuirk was hired to perform "nigger jokes."

* Robin Quivers claimed that when she worked with Imus at WNBC, he called her a "nigger" to her face. Both Howard Stern and Quivers have also claimed that he screamed "Nigger, Nigger" at an African American secretary named Becky during their time at WNBC.

* Imus has also repeatedly referred to Arabs as "ragheads."

* He has berated many female newsreaders, most recently Contessa Brewer, which caused her to leave the show. After she left the show, Imus went on a tirade, saying, "With that fat ass she's got, she wouldn't be one of 'em," [a news 'babe'.]. Imus said on the air, "That skank has to spend three hours with makeup in the morning." The tirade was allegedly tied to comments overheard from Contessa's calling Imus "a cantankerous old fool" at a 2005 dinner in a restaurant when she was still a newsreader.During a show a producer also made fun of poet Maya Angelou.

* On a December 15, 2004, show, Imus referred to publishers Simon & Schuster (under same ownership as CBS Radio) as "thieving Jews," and later in the show issued a mock apology, saying the phrase was "redundant." In October 1998, he described media critic Howard Kurtz as "that boner-nosed . . . beanie-wearing little Jew boy".

* The show's routines sometimes contained derogatory epithets for homosexuals, including "faggot" or "lesbo" and various terms describing homosexuality.

* Imus has also made fun of Irish, Jews, Italians, other nationalities and all political positions.

Cut Copy - Bright Like Neon Love (2004)

Photobucket

Melbourne's Cut Copy used to be just Dan Whitford. Then his sampler exploded, so he recruited some live musicians and recorded the rock-dance debutBright Like Neon Love.

Today's electro-pop records make the fusing of post-punk basslines, pop-synths and electro pulses and production sheen of the future their raison d'etre. Cut Copy's is no exception.

But their deep knowledge of their musical influences and intimate interactions with their machines help dissolve those demarcations in the same naturalistic way that Joy Division's dreary goth-rock magically morphed into the electronic pop of New Order.

The ghosts of both these bands can be heard throughout Bright Like Neon Love. The album's roots are firmly embedded in the world of classic 80s synth-pop, but though Whitfords voice is eerily similar to Bernard Sumner's, the music - 'a collection of 12 digital love letters' is much more effete than anything New Order or Depeche Mode ever produced.

Cut Copy's diluted vision, all optimistic synth-swirls and chugging 4/4 grooves, could easily have freefalled into cheese. But by restricting lyrics to short, rhythmic statements and allowing brief moments of jagged guitar to pierce the fluffy synth-clouds, Whitford has avoided the fromagery ensured a more lasting listen. - by Paul Sullivan

South Rakkas Crew
"Probably best described as a 2-step / speedgarage riddim, the kind normally blaring from carspeakers and estates in Harlesden in North West London and probably a tad too wild for the dancehall massive, is another riddim as much influenced by electronic dance music, breakbeat, hip hop and Miami-bass, described by Dow Jones himself as South Rakkas stripped down and built around an infectious groove, they showed getting in the different variations of their latest 'Chinkuzi' to be influenced by Miami bass, the UK-style of 2-step/speedgarage that was so obviously present in their 'Bionic Ras'-riddim, soca and slick US R&B as well as Madonna's "Like A Virgin". And now like Phenom Melody they show how much fun showing off the inspiration gotten from the early digital dancehall days can be..." - words by Souljah
